Wishes: Calm
This theme was quite challenging. I had to look up the definition a couple of times. Then on a busy, crazy day at work I though; I want to tackle this life moments with a Zen attitude. I thought I wish that in the mist of hectic schedules, loud noises, distractions I could always have the that feeling of calm. Like that feeling you get when you are in the middle of the forest (or even a quiet garden) and you see a quiet stream of water running, undisturbed.
So for this piece I used very vibrant colors, loud in a sense. And I quilted it in a very organic wavy pattern to resemble the water running through.
And in a way that is my wish for the new year: calm in the mist of chaos.
XO
Martha

Clever woman! How deceptively simple -like a Japanese Zen Garden or the way great chefs arrange the food on a plate. You nailed this challenge and you have a powerful little reminder to keep with you, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Maureen you are so kind :)
DeleteYour quilt is beautiful. I love the contrast between the vibrant fabrics and the quiet grey and then the organic quilting. I think calm in the midst of chaos is a wish that can come true for you this year, especially with this lovely quilt as a reminder. Good luck with practicing your Zen attitude :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Janine. :)
DeleteSuch a simple wish Martha but not necessarily easy to achieve. Your little piece of Zen will surely draw you in and help you achieve that state of calm in the midst of chaos.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right Fiona... it is not easy specially when we are always running against the clock.
DeleteGreat interpretation - and I completely understand it. Love that pretty pink in the little quilt and the binding. The piece makes me calm just looking at it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Wendy XX
DeleteI always think that your photos are stunning! Love the contrast in colours in your quilt from the loud to the soft, and my favourite bit is the calm waves of the quilting. I hope that you can find somewhere to hang it so you can keep it as a reminder of peaceful moments , and that you will have lots of them this year!
ReplyDeleteThanks Catherine! I will put it up on the wall in my sewing room to remember to slow down for a moment. :)
DeleteOh yes! Even using such a vibrant pink waves of calm calm flow through carrying your eyes to the more peaceful colors. It’s a great interpretation and a timely topic. I will search for Zen this year.

I love that idea. In Tai Chi when I was in college we explored stillness in movement and that always stayed with me and reminds me of that in the idea for your piece. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ruth. I think on our busy lives we have to practice that because it is difficult to slow down.
DeleteI have a nice, calm life (some might say to the extreme of being dull), so your combination of calm balanced with energy and cheer speaks to me and shows me another option! :)
