B****y Covid

My quilt doesn't need much explanation - it represents the majority of headlines at the moment, and pretty much sums up my feelings!

As the current situation drags on we're probably all getting a bit fed up so I had wanted some way of adding a small bit of hope to my quilt.  When I dug this newspaper print out of the drawer it seemed perfect because it is actually full of positive thoughts.  I'm not always keen on fabric like this but I thought that the message 'be gentle with yourself' and references to the good things in life - beauty, friendship, family, home and garden, etc, - were a good reminder that although Covid sometimes occupies centre stage, as it does in my quilt,  the things that make life worthwhile are still there.

My 'headline' is painted with fabric paint and I quilted in black round the letters, which are based on a font called Impact.   There is a double layer of batting under the white 'paper' which is stipple quilted.  The background newsprint is quilted in random geometric shapes inspired by the print.  I liked the way that the asterisks look vaguely like the Covid virus under the microscope!

I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling uninspired to be creative recently, and it was very good to have this challenge! As usual I'm looking forward to seeing what has inspired the other members of the Endeavourers.

  2. This is brilliant. I am so glad that you highlighted the actual words in the newspaper print as I didn't notice at first as Covid takes centre stage. The message that all the good stuff is still there is so true and we need reminding.
I also love that this challenge has given you a creative driver.
    It's all fabulous.

  3. Great job, Catherine. Yes, COVID. So tired of all the restrictions. I’m with you on the newspaper fabric. I have something similar. Sometimes it’s exactly what you need.

  4. Your quilt demonstrates how COVID topped all other news for the last almost 2 years now. Succinct and very expressive! A great interpretation of this theme.

  5. This pretty much says it all, I think! So tired of it all and ready for it to be history. Nice interpretation of the theme!

  7. I like that you made the quilt in black and white. It makes the statements more important. The other headlines in the piece are a great juxtaposition of the headline. Great job.

  8. On a lighter note: being an American, it took me a while to work out what the headline said. I thought it read "Bitchy Covid!" LOL! Oh well, either way we all can relate with the feelings behind your simple yet powerful quilt.

    1. Yes, despite our transatlantic language differences we're all in the same boat :-)

    1. Bloody! I realised afterwards it would have been better if I'd left the 'l' in. It's a bit British :-).

  11. Thank you for the explanation. I looked closer to see the highlighted words in the news print fabric. And I thought of B****y as an American expletive but didn’t think of the British term. Nice work.

  12. Its funny bloody used in colloqial language here isn't seen that much of a curse and I would not have been told off for it growing up until I visited cousins in Cardiff and they were horrified at my language! It took me a minute and then I got it and found myself nodding in agreement!
