Opposites Attract on August 1st

When the theme was announced, I immediately thought of Cats and Dogs, Yin and Yang, and a couple of others. They would have been easy enough to create, but they just didn't resonate. It being Summer and all, I just wanted to play. So I grabbed handfuls of scraps, sat down at the machine, and started making random half square triangles. And then I went with the Opposite that did resonate...my husband and me! I handed him the sewn triangles and asked him to put them together as he liked.

He went at it with great enthusiasm, working on it for four days on the bed in the guest room while the cats howled their displeasure at being shut out. I wanted him to make a small quilt, but once let loose, he would not be contained. "Just one more row," he kept saying. "Okaayyy...," I said. And that was that.

It's 3.5 x 4 feet / 1.067 x 1.22 meters, made with what I had, heavily quilted because I love a heavily crinkled quilt. Friend Debbi asked, "But is it an Art Quilt?" I said it's going on the wall over my bed, close enough.

And there you have it, Opposites Attract on August 1st.

  3. It's art because it is beautiful to look at. I love the balance of colours and the colourful sparkliness of it and It would give me great pleasure if I had it hanging on my wall! I also love the thought of the two of you working on this together!

    1. It IS balanced and sparkly, isn't it. He loves designing flower beds and Christmas lights, too. Color is his thing.

    1. It IS his vision, isn't it? It was fun to watch him become so absorbed in it and he's really proud of it.

  6. What a clever way to capture this challenge prompt, and what a pretty quilt. I'd be delighted with that hanging on my wall. How fun that the two of you could collaborate on the quilt. I can hear the cats protesting - mine does the same, very loudly.

  7. By the way, I looked the definition of art quilt - it's not about hanging on a wall but you did achieve an art quilt: The Art Quilt Association (USA) definition: “An art quilt is an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than handing down of a “pattern”. It experiments with textile manipulation, colour, texture and/or a diversity of mixed media.

  8. Yeah, it WAS an exploration of a concept, wasn't it?
