Soothing Sea

I chose a very simple image for this theme.  I used a piece of hand-dyed fabric for the background, and had lots of fun playing with different techniques -- raw-edge applique, thread sketching, painting, beading, and embellishing.

As with my previous piece for this group, Pieceful Trellis, I enjoyed dipping into another world while I worked, and I would love to add more layers and details to this scene.

To read more about how I made this piece, you can see my post at my home blog, Deep in the Heart of Textiles.  WordPress now has an awesome Image Compare feature, so you can slide between my inspiration photo and my finished piece over there.  :)

  1. Your hand-dyed fabric was just perfect for this theme Gwen, I love the tiny beads on your fishes too.

  4. I feel as if I'm there in the warm tropical water! I think that the way you have used different textures is really effective - the colours and different weights of threads for your coral, for example - and the thread painting on the fish to add shape and dimension is so beautifully done. Lovely!

  6. Hi Gwen, it's Maureen. I can't seem to comment on your quilt unless I use anonymous. Anyway, upon seeing your groovy quilt I felt a great need to snorkel! I always appreciate your use of many techniques -this from a lady who just sews squares together!

  8. I love your hand dyed fabric and all the stitching and embellishment you've added. It is all so vibrant and lively. It reminds me of those nature documentaries in tropical seas. I will definitely be popping over to learn more about it :)
