Making Waves

Well, I didn't have very far to look for inspiration for my piece for this quarter's challenge!

Kayak sailing past Cumbrae Island

On a good day this is the view from my sewing room window,

Waves breaking over Largs seafront

today, this is the view!

Hands holding denim seascape quilt

And here is "Making Waves" inspired by the stormy seas outside my window. The quilt is denim strips machine quilted to represent the movement of the waves, with snippets of lace, voile and beading for the wave crests.

A stumpwork seal plays in the waves just beyond the shoreline too.

I have had so much fun working on this challenge, and I am delighted with the final result so, once again, thank you Catherine and Janine for organising another great Endeavourers Challenge. I am really looking forward to seeing the wonderful interpretations by my fellow Endeavourers.

  1. Using denim is a great idea, and it looks so realistic! Love the little seal, too!

  2. Thanks Wendy, my original intention was to use silk strips but then I realised that the denim would be a better match for the sea colours and less hassle to work with! I was delighted with how the seal turned out as I had never made a stumpwork slip before :)

  3. Beautiful. I love the use of various colors of blue for the ocean. The seal is cute, Took me a few minutes to see it in the water. What are the dots on the hill? Sheep?

    1. Thanks Debbi, yes those dots are sheep. There are a few farms on the island so they are my nod to them :)

  4. I love this. The waves are so wavelike! :-) I think your use of different materials to add different details is inspired and captures all the feeling of the sea perfectly, and I love the sheep and your amazing seal which bring the scene to life. What you say on your blog about it being a different quilt to the one you envisaged is nice - I think that when you really get into the 'zone' the quilt sometimes starts to make its own suggestions! :-)

    1. Thanks Catherine, when the theme was announced I was so sure of my intended project but this one definitely pushed itself to the forefront of my mind and once there it was impossible to ignore it :)

  5. I was excited to see the water of my Largs Graffiti Moon quilt done from another perspective and in another mood! You have captured the wildness of the stormy sea perfectly! And the narrowness of the quilt puts the focus on that wildness. Grand!

  6. This is so well done. I love that you’ve used denim for your scene. I’ve always wanted to try that, but so many projects, you know...one of these days. Nice work.

    1. Thanks Barbara, the denim worked much better than I expected so I would definitely move it higher up that list :)

  7. This is brilliant Fiona! You have perfectly imitated the sea here, and I’m sure it would have been hard to stitch with denim! I love all the details and especially the waves, sheep, surfer and seal! Wonderful!
    Well done my friend!

    1. Thanks Barbara, actually the denim wasn't too difficult to stitch at all especially as I was happy to embrace the fraying edges :)
