When I fist read the concept for this project I thought - oh this is going to be easy- well it turned out more difficult than I thought. The idea was to create an applique spiral using twine rope; let the shape be very organic and freehand the applique. I used a zig-zag stitch to applique the twine to the quilt and basically let the stitches go through all the layers of the quilt to quilt it as I was doing the applique. While I liked the technique I'm not sure about the whole execution of this project. I'm really dived whether I like it or not. I like the texture of the twine and the quilt and applique at the same time technique, but I think next time the spirals should be more structured.
I can't wait to see your projects and see what you came up for this concept of spirals.

I have a book on designing spirals Martha and there is a lot more to them than you might at first think! I really like the organic nature of your spiral.
ReplyDeleteI love your elegant quilts and this is no exception :-) I'd be happy to have it on my wall! It reminds me of spirals in rock carvings, but it's also got a very peaceful look about it for such a dynamic shape.
ReplyDeleteI like it a lot. You have captured the fuzziness of the plants in the piece and I find it intriguing and love the apparent simplicity. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI like it too. It is very peaceful to look at, and I love the way you echoed the color of the spirals in part of the binding.
ReplyDeleteMartha, I just love how we all critique our own work. Spirals ARE difficult. Janine talked about a Spiral Quilt Book on her blog post about this project. I have seen it on Amazon and I'm pretty sure the next time I order, I'll include it in my order. I really think I'd like to pursue spiral construction. I always like a creation that a tiny bit off kilter. I always think it adds interest. This is a nice piece.

This is organic and the plants in the photos tell me more of the story. This may be just the first in a spiral series you create! I like that it is not perfect, it makes my eye stop and think for a moment, which is good.
ReplyDeleteI love your organic spiralling. It's an interesting technique and a very nice balance of the colour and texture of the spiral against the plain background. And your photos are wonderful. They display it perfectly :)
ReplyDeleteA great idea, Martha! And an interesting technique! Love the backset for your photos!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt!
