This little quilt is a celebration of my first piece of textile art, though I didn't know that until I'd finished making it. I made it to illustrate a memory of the contents of my first sewing box, when I sewed everything together in the hope of making a stylish garment and got myself in a deal of trouble for 'wasting' it all. You can read more about it at
Rainbow Hare.
I hope you are all keeping safe and well and I'm looking forward to seeing all the quilts this quarter :)
What a joyful piece! :-). It really captures your happiness at having created something wonderful, and your own, before you were told off for it!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I really did want to make something cheerful as a break from the news and weather all being a bit depressing just now!
DeleteYour little lady looks so full of the joys of Spring, I could almost imagine that she is going to jump off the quilt at any minute Janine. What a lovely memory to have and recreate in this way :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Fiona. When I've made people before, I've drawn templates and spent a lot of time but with this this one I just improved her cutting and sewing on fabric as I went and I think she looks more lively for it so I shall try that again another time :)
DeleteThis just makes me smile, and makes me curious, so I'll have to pop over to your blog and read the whole story. I hope you have this placed where you see it each day; it's a perfect reminder to choose joy!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I have put her on the wall with a clothes peg :)
DeleteThis is so cute. It made me think of the first skirt I made in home economics class. It had to have a waistband, and I chose the ugliest fabric you’ve ever seen. (It looked good on the bolt!) Nicely done. Whimsical and sweet.
ReplyDeleteI still find fabric fabrics can look much better or sometimes much worse on the bolt :)
DeleteWhen I was in Kindergarten I got myself in a good deal of trouble for making a piece of art that didn't follow the rules we were given. It seems we proved them wrong, huh? I love this.
ReplyDeleteHmmn kindred spirits!
DeleteI received a similar set of supplies, but obediently followed the instructions, thereby dooming myself to receiving more of those kits as presents. I put more details of this story on Rainbow Hare -- but if I had known you back then, you would have been my hero! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. That is such a lovely thing to say :)
DeleteSo much joy in one little piece. I love those little scissors. All the embellishments remind me of all the notions you gather up as a sewist that seem to explode everywhere. I was gifted a sewing box by my mum after I had taken up sewing and bought all the bits and pieces myself!
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, some of those buttons and embellishments were my Mum's. I don't know if she trusts me now or if she just didn't think she'd ever use them!
