I had a lot of trouble getting something done for this challenge. First I thought of doing a portrait of my mother who passed 6 1/2 years ago. I began that project but did not like it at all, ended up taking it apart.
Then I decided to try making a quilt of an orchid since my parents grew a lot of them and they filled the house and green house when I was growing up. Both of those tries did not work - one was thrown out and the other still sits on my table not knowing what will become of it.
The next thing I tried was something with symbols from all my travels. Since I have a sewing machine that does embroidery, I put a few designs on cloth, then became disillusioned with that one, too. Just did not inspire me.
Went back to the first idea of my Mom. Got further along but then I just stopped. It is still sitting there on top of the orchid. Maybe I will finish it....someday.
So here is one that I made a few years ago. It was part of a challenge with a few friends. We each made a list of things about ourselves and shared the list. This is the soft book I made from what others, and myself, made.
I took a picture of my wedding, transferred it to cloth and sewed it onto the background along with an embroidered heart and rings and the date of my wedding.
If anyone wants to see more of the book, it is on my web page from March 2020: https://yogaromaquilter.blogspot.com/.
It’s lovely. Thank you for sharing your project and your process. It was a broad topic, and I had a hard time settling on something too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you both - it's such an interesting topic and I also I found it bewilderingly hard to settle on a plan! I'm glad you showed us this quilt, which fits the bill and captures that important memory beautifully.
ReplyDeleteSometimes no matter how much thought you expend on it you just cannot get a handle on a theme and this was such a broad theme I think we all struggled with narrowing it down to one project! I am sure that we will see those projects sitting on your table in another guise in the future when they will turn out to be just perfect for your plan :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the others - this was a tough topic. It seems there was so much, and yet so little, to choose from! I enjoyed seeing this quilt you made, as well as your process!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved this picture of you and Julian. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI also struggled to settle on something to make for this theme. I expect the pieces you have abandoned for now will turn out to be just right for some other quilt one day. In the meantime, thank you for sharing this with us. It is beautiful and fits the theme perfectly :)
ReplyDeleteI am sorry you weren't happy with your efforts, but I hope those pieces are just simmering until they come to fruition for you later. I think this piece is a lovely interpretation of the theme!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure of it the theme or the circumstances of the craziness that covid has brought on us but I've been finding it hard to focus. So I see myself in your discarded attempts. They will become something something in the end I'm sure. Thanks for showing us your gorgeous piece - a lovely way to show a happy memory.
