Textile Challenge...Flotsam/Jetsam, Endeavorers

Flotsam/Jetsam, texture challenge small quilt, close up.

The backing floral had a beach grass/weedy look to me, just right.

About 18 x 18".

Flotsam/Jetsam, Texture Challenge Quilt finish.

The texture challenge was a good stretch for me. I wanted to keep this project light and uncluttered.
I started with a canvas made of squares of Kona cotton solid, smooth, and Robert Kaufman's Essex linen blend, rougher. And that got hand quilted, a start on texture.

Running stitches, French knots and cross stitches were added. Then I added shredded laces and fabric scraps rolled and couched down for a look of some odds and ends you might find washed up on the beach. And maybe the cross stitches are little star fish?

So that's my take on texture stuff you might find on a beach.
I look forward to seeing what everyone else has come up with and to more challenges,
Thank you.

  1. I like your art quilt. I think embroidery stitches like you have on your piece truly add texture to textile items. You did a very nice job on balancing the extras on the 9 patch base. Glad you are part of the group.

  2. Janie, it was your preview post which got me thinking of using some of my “flotsam”. I like the subtle color differences and texture in the fabrics as well.

    1. Thank you, Paula. I'm glad to share inspiration.
I like your collection of buttons among the other textures, they do stand out adding pizzaz.

  4. This is beautiful. Your stitching and embellishment has created a lovely quilt, which captures the spirit of flotsum and jetsum washed up on the beach perfectly :)

  5. I really like the soft colors, and the combination of hand and machine stitching. And you even brought back spirals from our earlier challenge. :)
