Quilt Reveal of "Nature Photography"

This exciting day has arrived!
The Endeavourers, a new online art quilt group has its first quilt reveal for its members!
Our group of 14 quilters from around the world were charged to interpret the theme of NATURE and make a quilt based on it. You can read our mission statement HERE.

I was not the only member who had ideas churning in my head for nearly two months. Nature can be defined in many ways such as the essence of something, human nature or that of Mother Nature. I chose to focus on the definition of nature as "the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations."

I continued to look at photos I had taken in the last few years on my walks and travels--that showed how I interpreted the theme of nature. I could not decide on a single photo that told my story, so I selected 24 of my favorites. I chose to collage them. Below is my completed quilt (22.5 inches by 21.5 inches) I call NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY.
I challenged myself to move out of my comfortable piecing techniques. The idea of film negatives (from bygone times, when I was a kid and a young mom) where we took photos and didn't discover the results until they were returned from developing and printing. It is so much easier now, delete the photo that does not meet our expectations, save those we want on a hard drive, CD, memory stick--or, the Cloud! To be printed when we desire and how we desire.

  1. How beautiful, and with a chuckle, how true! Digital work has surely changed how we can capture nature's beauty.

  2. What a great idea and it's so striking with the soft images from nature framed with the graphic film edge! I like that this is a kind of curated/edited view - we can do it with photos and with memories too - and that it's your personal collection of favourite images from nature transformed into a quilt!

  3. I love what you have done with this Nancy, it is so easy to take lots of photos knowing that you can delete the worst of them later. Your quilt will be a lovely reminder of good times for a long time to come.

  4. You found the solution to my dilemma when selecting a design. This is just about the best way to include all aspects of nature in one design. Beautiful and brilliant.

  5. This is a brilliant way of displaying the range and diversity of nature. Those film negatives seem almost iconic now and I love your use of that idea for the framing/borders. They really make your photos pop. This is a beautiful quilt and also a wonderful reminder of the natural world you have enjoyed on your walks :)

  7. I love this quilt, and the idea of the framing both emphasized the quality of the photographs as well as tells a story about them. So beautiful, Nancy--well done!
